Where Does Unused Quota Go After an AI Reset?
My account still had 25% quota left. Why doesn't a reset give me 125%, and how much did I actually gain?

Does a Reset Increase or Decrease Your Total Quota Before Your Subscription Ends?
This reset filled my balance now but moved my refill date. Will my total scheduled quota before my subscription ends increase or decrease?
These guides distinguish official provider rules from our model assumptions. Always verify your actual allowance and refill schedule in your account dashboard and specific promotion details.
What does a full reset actually add?
A full meter does not mean a full quota of extra capacity. In our replacement model, your unused balance is replaced. If the reset also moves your next refill, the total scheduled quota before subscription expiry can change too.
- Immediate net gain
- New quota minus the unused balance replaced by the reset. With 25% remaining and a refill to 100%, the immediate net gain is 75 percentage points of one weekly quota.
- Subscription-cycle difference
- Compare no reset and reset over the same period. Count the starting balance and scheduled refills strictly before expiry, then subtract the two totals. Do not subtract the unused balance again.
- Quota you can actually use
- Scheduled quota is not a promise of completed work. Other usage limits, your demand and the time left before expiry can affect how much you use.
Can a reset add quota now but reduce the total?
Yes, in our model. Start with 25% remaining, the original refill in 24 hours, and 30 days until expiry. Assume one weekly refill every 168 hours, with the reset restarting that clock immediately. No reset gives 525 weekly units over the period, versus 500 after reset. The immediate gain is 75 units, but the period total is 25 units lower. One weekly quota is 100 units; this is not a cash loss.

OpenAI’s banked-reset guide says a full reset refreshes both Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date
. Check Settings → Usage for your actual new refill time. The example above uses a simplified 168-hour schedule.

The Claude comparison models a reset that keeps the original refill date. It is an assumption, not a claim about every Claude promotion or reset.
